Theory Test

The theory test is in two parts - the first part contains multiple choice questions and the second part is hazard perception. Both elements of the test have to be passed at the same time and you must pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical driving test. Most theory tests are carried out at dedicated theory test centres.

Question Element

The first part of the theory test involves 50 multiple choice questions on a touch screen computer. Questions have between 4 and 6 possible answers and between 1 and 4 answers are correct. The pass mark is 43 out of 50.

Hazard Perception (HPT) Element

When you've completed the questions, the Hazard perception test will start. This part of the test consists of 14 clips of film each lasting around 30 or 40 seconds. In total there are 15 "developing hazards" that you will need to identify by clicking the mouse. The sooner you identify the scoring hazards, the better your score. There is a maximum of 5 points per scoring hazard. The hpt pass mark is 44 out of 75.

At On4Wheels we can provide full advice and support for both aspects of the theory test.
